How to get from Athens to Milos: Your Guide to Travel

Having traveled to the Cyclades many times, I know that getting to Milos, with its stunning landscapes and unique beaches, is a journey many people plan carefully. Over the years, I've navigated the routes from Athens to this captivating island using various methods. In this guide, I want to share my personal insights and practical tips to help you choose the best way to start your Milos adventure.

How to get from Athens to Milos

Getting from Athens to Milos is a journey I’ve personally made several times, and I've found there are two primary methods to consider, each with its own advantages. Your choice largely depends on your travel style, budget, and how much time you have.

  • By Ferry: This is the most common and often preferred method for a more scenic and traditional Greek island experience, departing from Piraeus Port.

  • By Flight: For those prioritizing speed and convenience, a short domestic flight from Athens International Airport offers the quickest transfer.

Traveling by Ferry from Athens to Milos

The ferry journey from Athens to Milos is a quintessential Greek island experience. It's a fantastic way to soak in the Aegean Sea's vastness and often offers a more relaxed pace of travel. I've always enjoyed seeing the other islands pass by.

Ferry Operators and Types

Several ferry companies operate routes from Athens (Piraeus Port) to Milos. You'll generally find two types of ferries: conventional and high-speed.

  • Conventional Ferries: These are larger, slower, and generally more stable. The journey can take anywhere from 4 to 5 hours, but they often have more amenities, like car decks, cafes, and open-air seating areas. They are usually more budget-friendly.

  • High-speed Ferries: These are faster, typically taking around 3 to 4.5 hours. They're often catamarans or hydrofoils, offering a quicker trip but with fewer outdoor spaces and can be more susceptible to rough seas. They are also usually more expensive.

Popular operators I've used include Seajets (high-speed) and Minoan Lines (often conventional). Their schedules can vary seasonally, so checking in advance is crucial.

If you were to ask me though, my all time favorite has to be Minoan Lines, connects from Piraeus to Milos in about 4 hours.

Port Information and Departure

All ferries to Milos from Athens depart from Piraeus Port, which is easily accessible from central Athens or Athens.

International Airport (ATH) by metro, bus, or taxi. I always allow ample time to get to the correct gate, as Piraeus is a very large and busy port. Gates E3 or E7 are typically where ferries to the Cyclades depart from, but always confirm your specific gate number on your ticket.

Oh, and if you wanna stay near Pollonia, try to find seaside apartments which are quiet and close to the beach. Makes for a perfect base to explore the island after you arrive.

Booking Your Ferry Tickets

I highly recommend booking your ferry tickets well in advance, especially if you're traveling during peak season (July and August) or around Greek holidays.

You can book online directly through the ferry company websites or via various ferry booking platforms. E-tickets are generally common now, making the process very smooth.

Flying from Athens to Milos

If time is of the essence, flying is undoubtedly the fastest way to reach Milos from Athens. It saves you several hours of travel time compared to even the fastest ferries.

Airlines and Flight Duration

Domestic flights from Athens International Airport (ATH) to Milos Island National Airport (MLO) are operated primarily by:

  • Aegean Airlines (via Olympic Air): These are typically small propeller planes.

  • Sky Express: Another regional airline offering direct flights.

The flight duration is remarkably short, usually around 30 to 45 minutes. Flights are frequent, especially during the summer months, but book up quickly due to the small aircraft capacity.

Airport Logistics

Athens International Airport (ATH) is well-connected to the city center via metro, suburban rail, and bus services. Milos Island National Airport (MLO) is a small airport located about 5 kilometers from Adamas, the main port town.

Taxis are readily available outside the Milos airport, and some accommodations offer transfers.

Which Option is Right for Your Trip?

When deciding between a ferry and a flight, I consider a few key factors:

  • Budget: Ferries are generally more economical, especially conventional ones. Flights can be pricier, particularly if booked last minute.

  • Time: Flights are significantly faster. If you have limited time on your trip, flying makes sense.

  • Experience: The ferry offers a unique sea voyage, often with beautiful views. Flying is practical but less about the
journey and more about the destination.

  • Flexibility: Ferry schedules can be impacted by strong winds, leading to delays or cancellations, which is less common with flights unless there are extreme weather conditions.

  • Luggage: Ferries usually have more generous luggage allowances than small domestic flights.

Ultimately, both methods provide a reliable way to get to beautiful Milos. I've found that planning ahead, regardless of your chosen mode of transport, is the best way to ensure a smooth and enjoyable start to your island adventure.
